Image with excerpt on not showing on home page

If a post has an image at the top, the image is not shown with the automatic (not manual) excerpt on the home page UNLESS you insert <!-- more --> into the post.
Is this correct function?
It works even if there is nothing to display after the <!--more--> line.

Yes, that's correct.
The only way the image will show with the automatic excerpt is when you set it as your featured image: https://generatepress.com/knowledgebase/featured-images/
