Image for category widget

Hi there,
I don´t know if my question fits in this forum but I´ll try :-)
I use the stock category widget which perfectlly lists the categories of my posts. My problem is, I want to add an image in front of every categorie, so you can choose a category without reading the word. How can I realize it? I don´t find any plugin or other possibility. (I`m new in website creating).

oh thanks a lot for you work and the link, but is there maybe a way to realize my idea without editing the template (I don`t have any experience in programming an d its meanings :-( ). I just want a widget, which lists my categories with image and text (instead only text).
I´m so sorry, I actually noticed that I can realise the Idea without any addinonal widgets or else. I just had use categories instead of pages in the menu. Thanks again for your help. I have a lot to learn :-)
