How to set no of posts shown on home page

Hi, how do I set the number of post shown on home page to 5 or 7 instead of 6? I have set them up on 2 columns with the first one featured. There's always the 6th post at the bottom on one side only and so the design looks unbalanced. Need help please. Thanks very much.
