How to Customize my header and footer?

Hi Guys,
How to customize my header/footer and the social media icons, links, etc. on a fresh install. Do you have a guide for that?
Do I need to play with the Elements features?
I am talking in general. Currently building new websites.

I would recommend using GB's buttons block with icons to add social icons:

Here is an example of adding it in header/navigation:

If this doesn't help then please provide specific examples that you'd like to achieve.
