How To Customize Entry Meta

How do I customize the entry meta? I use Avery theme.
I'd like to remove the published date and the separator line.
I'd like the entry meta to be: by author

is this for the My Latest Articles on the Front Page?
I'm sorry, I should have specified. I'm talking about the published date and author under the post and page titles. I already removed the one via layout-blog, but there is still another published date immediately under the post title. (The heading 1)
Aah ok..
Go to Appearance > Elements and edit the Global Posts Header ( Or if you're viewing a Post you will see a link in the Admin Bar > Elements )
There you can edit/remove the content you don't require.
To add the word by before the Author name see here:

1. Select the Post Author Name
2. Click the Data Options
3. Complete the Before Text Field.
