How to 'contain' content on entire website?

Hello,
How can I have all content in every post and page on my site with a 'contained' layout as shown in the screenshot? https://snipboard.io/629C8t.jpg

At the moment my pages are all full-width. I know I can use blocks to modify each page but I thought that with the GP theme I could specify the layout for the whole site.

Apologies but I'm a newbie for web designer and Generate Press.

Thank you for your help.

Hi there,

This is generally set on container width setting on Appearance > Customize > Layout > Container.
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/container-layout-overview/

But this can be overridden when you have Layout Element that sets the container area to "Full-width (no padding)". If your site is on full-width, you most likely have a layout element that sets it. Edit this Layout element and set the proper display rule so it only applies to the pages you want it to apply on.

You can use the location and exclude function of display rule to control this.

Thank you, Elvin.
As far as I know, I don't have any Layout Element. The only element I've implemented so far is the header element and that is selected for 'Use Navigation as Header'.
My layout settings are also different from the link you provide. Please see the screenshot at https://snipboard.io/strQw9.jpg

It doesn't look like your site has GP Premium activated. But in this context, it's fine if you only want to to set the contents to "contained". Looking at that setting, the site contents should be contained to max width of 1200px.

But note that there are other things that may override this like container blocks that are set to "align full".

Hello Elvin

Why wouldn't GP Premium be activated? I have access to all premium features as shown in the screenshot

How do I get the same settings as the link you showed?
When you say 'container blocks' do you mean any Qubely block that I used on any post or page?

Thanks

Sorry, I meant "GP Premium Spacing Module". You'll need the Spacing module activated for it to appear.

All Blocks that are set to "Align Full" or "full width" will exceed the container width set on the customizer. https://share.getcloudapp.com/7KuPkJpr

If you have that set, the block will exceed the container regardless of what limit is set.

Thanks, Elvin. I'll investigate and see if I can figure it out.

If you can link us to the page you're working on, we can help in inspecting things.

No problem. :D

Hello Elvin
I'm trying to redesign my site with a clone and the whole site is a mess right now. If you like you can inspect the clone at https://v4kpqlhzzxz.c.updraftclone.com/

There are numerous problems that I've already asked about in this forum including
Full-width pages, posts, and category pages but I want all in a container format as previously shown
Posts on category pages all full width but I would like a post grid type format.

I'm thinking it may be easier just to upload one of the GP sites from the site library because I'm not good at web design.

I appreciate any suggestions, comments, or advice.
Thank you

Thanks. I've inspected your site and I think you may actually have a Layout Element forcing the page to go full-width. To check this, go on Appearance > Elements.

Full-width(no padding) has this effect on the site.

Can you provide any mockup image/s of how you want it to look like? Perhaps a reference site you want to replicate?

On that context, perhaps you'll find GP Premium 2.0's Block element interesting. You can use it to format your archive pages.

You can actually try that and learn from an existing design. :)

Or feel free to ask us everything you need to know. It's fine, that's what we're here for. We try to help out as much as we can. :)

Hello Elvin
Thank you for your great advice and effort.
I understand what you are saying and thanks for the video. However, 'm still not sure what layout element is affecting the site. I'll have to have a closer look

I would like to have my new generator press site with a similar layout to the site at goodcoffeeplace.com - for pages, posts, and category pages.

I see.

This requires a bit of custom CSS and some extra plugin if you want to replicate it completely.

You need a custom CSS to match the style.

You also need a plugin for the post listing because the post lists like "Coffee Beans", "Coffee Gear" and "Coffee Brewing" seem like categories and you'll require a post list plugin for that.

For this, you can use WP Show Posts. http://wpshowposts.com/

The general layout is pretty simple.

There's a featured image, and then the post list for different categories in columns of 3 follows. These can all be added within the content when you're editing the page.

Then there's a right sidebar with another post list in it for the latest post. The right sidebar can be enabled through the Customizer settings. Appearance > Customize > Layout > Sidebars.

As for inserting things within the sidebar, you can go to Appearance > Widgets and add things in within the Right Sidebar area.

Thank you for all your help.

No problem. :)
