How to change Word Press author page URL

Hi guys!
Is there a way to customise the default Word Press author page URLs without using a plugin?
They usually look something like: website.com/author/r97egjhgfs73gd/
but it would be nice if they could relate better to the author name.
Any advice?

What's your Permalink structure? Can you try setting it to Post Name in Settings > Permalinks?

It is set POST NAME.

Hi there,
by default it should show the author slug - which is generated from the Username in the users profile.
If the username differs to that string in your example URL then there is something else on the site that is rewriting the permalink.
