How can I add schema markup for my authors?

are you using an SEO plugin? As they generally provide JSON-LD schema support for things such as this.
Yes, I am using The SEO Framework plugin.
It seems that plugin provides the article schema option:
https://kb.theseoframework.com/kb/structured-data-supported-by-the-seo-framework/
Which is where you can include the author:
https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/structured-data/article#author-bp
