How does the Aspire theme use the Recent Posts widget to display featured images

Hi, there! I'm using the Aspire theme to build out a client site, and on the blog, the Recent Posts widget shows the featured image and looks really nice. On our site, the default Recent Posts widget doesn't have an option for displaying the image. Is the demo using a different added plugin to get that functionality, or is there something that you've added to the demo's functions.php file? I'd rather do it without the need for an additional plugin, but would like to also adhere to the way the theme builds out its elements.
