I haven’t touched my layout for a couple of years, so I’m not familiar with changing my blog – https://stephenmoon.com
I’m looking to have the home page feature all the blog posts, in a two-column newspaper style. (Then an about page, so two pages total).
I keep getting stuck in the whole ‘home page can’t be blog page’ and static page stuff. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? It feels like it should be simple and it’s me being simple.
December 23, 2020 at 6:14 am #1591913DavidStaffCustomer SupportHi there,
if you want to display just your posts on your Home Page, then you go to Dashboard > Settings > Reading and change the Your homepage displays to Latest Posts.
To then format the Post list into two columns:
1. First enable the Blog Module in Dashboard > Appearance > GeneratePress.
2. The in Customizer > Layout > Blog you will see a lot of options for formatting your blog:https://docs.generatepress.com/article/blog-content-layout/
Which also includes the option to enable and set the number of columns:
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-columns-in-the-blog/
Your existing static Home Page will still be a standard page, which you can edit if you wish, change its Title and use elsewhere.
December 23, 2020 at 7:47 am #1592183Stephen MoonThat’s really helpful thanks, but I have two further questions –
On the About page I now have an Archive and Search on the right of the page, I didn’t put them there and I can’t see anywhere to remove them.
When loading the site, it lands on About and I want it to land on Blog as the homepage. Any ideas please?
December 23, 2020 at 8:08 am #1592204DavidStaffCustomer SupportDisable the Sidebars across the site in Customizer > Layout > Sidebars.
What are you Settings > Reading options set to ?
December 23, 2020 at 8:26 am #1592227Stephen MoonLayout>Sidebars says Content (no sidebar) in all three options, which is why I’m confused. And I don’t have any Sidebar widgets set either.
Settings>Reading options, I get the same response whether I use Static Page>Homepage>Blog or Your Latest Posts
I have put login details below if you have chance to look at the dashboard to make sure I’m not being megadumb
December 23, 2020 at 10:18 am #1592325LeoStaffCustomer SupportWhen I click on the About page, it actually redirects me to the home page and I’m not seeing a sidebar in either of the links there.
Can you disable all plugins except GP Premium so we can have a cleaner look first?
December 23, 2020 at 10:24 am #1592334Stephen MoonI have deactivated all plugins except GP Premium, thanks Leo
December 23, 2020 at 10:28 am #1592338LeoStaffCustomer SupportAre you referring to the Blog page? If so you’ve selected Right Sidebar in the metabox here:
https://www.screencast.com/t/xNIY379KjbepDecember 23, 2020 at 10:41 am #1592356Stephen MoonAh, thank you, I was bouncing around the Theme section trying to sort it.
The problem of Blog page and About page is still with me though. My About page is showing the blog posts and my Blog page is blank. I’ve tried every combination and can’t get that to change.
December 23, 2020 at 10:45 am #1592360LeoStaffCustomer SupportDavid actually explained it in his initial reply and this is the setting you are looking for:
https://wordpress.org/support/article/settings-reading-screen/If you want your home page to display the posts, then you can just remove the Blog page.
December 23, 2020 at 12:35 pm #1592483Stephen MoonI’m being really dumb Leo. If I navigate between the two pages with the site live, Blog becomes a blank page with a header and About shows all the blog posts.
But when I go to About on the WP dashboard and edit, it has the ‘about’ text.
It may not be anything to do with GP Premium and I may have to look at WordPress.
December 23, 2020 at 12:45 pm #1592494YingStaffCustomer SupportHi Stephen,
For the issue of homepage landing, it’s not your homepage lands on ABOUT page, but the ABOUT page link is set to HOMEPAGE.
To fix that problem, you could simply change the ABOUT page link in menu. (Please be noted that due to the slug you added, your about page link is NOT xxxxx.com/about, removing the slug will change the about page link to xxxxx.com/about if you want)
Or here’s a better way to add pages to menu:
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-the-wordpress-menu-builder/#how-to%C2%A0add-pages-to-your-menuSince homepage display is set to Your latest posts, the homepage is an index page now and you don’t actually need a static blog page.
Let me know if this works ๐
December 23, 2020 at 1:13 pm #1592517Stephen MoonYay!
That fixed it. I really appreciate your help.Merry Christmas to you guys.
