Help with custom homepage

Hello awesome GP people!
I want to create a homepage inspired by this site: http://hiconsumption.com
I'm not that proficient with wordpress yet so not sure where to start to achieve something like that.
Should I somehow try do customize the blog page or use static page? Should I create a new page layout?
How would you approach this, if you wanted to create something similar?
Does not have to be as fancy as that website but I like the structure very much:
Featured Post
Latest stories (blog-posts plugin?)
Editors picks (some kind of sticky post plugin?)
Email capture
More posts…
Next posts button (page 2 has different layout, simple two column)
What about static page and using sections? (have not tried sections yet)
I'm using GP Premium btw.
Thanks.
Hi Karl,
You'd want to use a static page
Then using Sections and Tom's WP Show Posts (https://en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/wp-show-posts/) should get you close.
Start with that and let us know if you have more questions.
Sweet, thanks man!
Hi, I'm trying to figure out how I can use WP Show Posts to show only the latest post. The idea is that I would use sections to create a "featured post section" and show only one post (the newest post).
Then I'll create another section that will show the six latest posts. The wierd thing here is when I create a list in WPSP and set Posts per page to 6 it will always show 7 posts. Tried setting it to show 3 posts but still shows 7. Tried hard refresh in browser. Im on localhost btw.
Hmm that doesn't sound right. If you're able to get it up on a live server and can send me login details, that would be super helpful!
Thanks but I figured it out. I forgot that I had some custom PHP code. Removed it and now it works perfectly. :-)
Glad it's working :)
