GeneratePress and Mantle child theme

I installed and activated Mantle - without installing GeneratePress. Mantle is described as a child theme of GeneratePress. I don't understand what that means.
I probably still need to create a child of Mantle if I want to play around with the CSS and PHP.

Hi there,
Mantle uses GeneratePress functions and customizer options to look different than the default theme.
Unfortunately you can't make a child of a child theme, so if you want to add CSS and PHP, you'll need do so like this:

Adding PHP: https://generatepress.com/knowledgebase/adding-php-functions/
