Hello,
What kind of blocks/elements to use to try to create a front page like this...like a magazine sort of layout?..different categories and articles showing up down the page..

Hi Nicole,
We are still developing our own query loop block, so for now, I would recommend using WP show posts plugin or the Query loop block(a WP block)
ok, how do i put the shortcode into the page?

in the Block Editor, add a Shortcode Block and paste in your shortcode.
