Featured Image with Page Hero effects

I'm not sure which way is the best way to go, either make the page hero smaller with the sidebar or make the featured image behave like the sidebar. I'm using the dispatch layout from the library and I like the title and meta data overlay that it does on the hero image, but i just want it to fit like the featured image does with the sidebar to the right of it. What's the easiest way to achieve that layout and overlay effect?
