excerpt not working with next post

this is the first time this has happened to me, all blog posts on front page have 50 word excerpt with 'read more' link. I created a new post today and published it, but it shows the entire full length post on the front/home page while the other 9 blog posts are still in excerpt format. any idea what could be wrong?
Did you give it a different post format other than the standard one?
Or use the more tag?: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-the-more-tag/
post format was it - not sure how i changed it, wasn't even aware of that option - Thanks so much!
