Excerpt for Blog

Hi guys,
I know that WordPress has issues with excerpt when text is placed in the container. However, when I use manual excerpt I do not get a Read More text or button with GP. Excerpt is set to 55 words, but as many as I add it overrides that setting.
Is there any workaround for this without installing additional plugins?
