Hmm have you tried disabling all plugins to test?

I had previously disabled all plugins and tested again with them disabled as you just suggested and still got the error. It's really strange. I've got the site the way I like it, but unable to make any changes directly to functions.php through the WP dashboard. I don't think I'll need to make any more changes, but it would be nice to know everything works fine before I remove the protected URL password protect and push the site to live.
