Ok now activate a twenty series theme and do the same thing.
Does the same issue happen?

So that test shows it’s not a theme issue.
Please follow up with Site Ground support again and show them this setup and try to get a better answer from them.

See the screenshot for his response. I tested it and no error. I’m tempted to migrate the current site to the new test site to see if it works but I don’t want to mess anything up. What do you think?

Hmm have you tried disabling all plugins to test?
I had previously disabled all plugins and tested again with them disabled as you just suggested and still got the error. It’s really strange. I’ve got the site the way I like it, but unable to make any changes directly to functions.php through the WP dashboard. I don’t think I’ll need to make any more changes, but it would be nice to know everything works fine before I remove the protected URL password protect and push the site to live.
Unfortunately in that case I’m out of ideas here.
