Error message with installation

upon starting the installation process I receive the following messages:
Warning: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to WordPress.org. Please contact your server administrator.) in C:\xampp\htdocs\WP\wp-includes\update.php on line 129
That said it appeared the installation had finished because I could see the plugin, but when I went and clicked on the Appearance menu, I did not see the menu item GeneratePress.

Hi Tom,
That's strange - you may want to contact your hosting to see if it's an issue on the server-side of things.
I just installed GP on one of my test servers and didn't have any issues, so I don't think it's a WordPress.org issue.
