But if you want, you can disable mobile header at customizer > layout > header.

Thanks, that worked - a lot of the customizations in the header and sticky nav changed.

I managed to fix most of it, but should I use a child theme to prevent this from happening in the future?

Or will that not save me from customizer updates?

Customizer options will not change or be lost during the theme updates, so don't worry about it :)
