Dollie Plugin Breaks Comments on GeneratePress Theme
12 replies · Started by Mick on August 20, 2021
Using the Dollie plugin with GeneratePress eats the comments. Blog posts will show comments and the comment box. The second I activate Dollie – BAM – comments are gone. It's only with GeneratePress; I switched to the 2020 theme to test and the comments are still showing up. I've reached out to Dollie support as well, but I thought you guys might know of a workaround for this. Please advise. I had to set up a staging site to figure this issue out so I can easily test any suggestions.
Update to this - I just discovered comments are broken ONLY on posts. In my attempts to activate comments I apparently turned them on for every page. So the Leave a Comment box shows up on the blog page, but none of the blog POSTS.
Hi Mick,
Can you link us to the site in question?
You can use the private information field.
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-the-premium-support-forum/#private-information
Sorry - that would be helpful to include. I'll enable comments on the blog page just for comparison.
I can't see how this could be a theme issue. All other comments plugin I've seen usually works out of the box with GeneratePress.
Can you disable all plugins and custom functions except Dollie to test?
Make sure you are using a parent theme as well.
It would be good to hear back from their support to see if there are any implementation needed.
That's exactly what my staging site is - no plugins activated except Dollie. I'm switching between the 2020 theme and GeneratePress parent theme. No child theme, no custom functionality. The only odd thing about this site is that I manually rebuilt it based on an existing site, so the appointment and contract plugins had to be manually migrated with phpMyAdmin, and the admin user ID number changed at one point. It's also on a different host, which it was migrated to via Duplicator. Other than that I can't think of anything else strange about this install.
No response from Dollie yet, but I'll pass info back and forth as soon as I have it. Also I've copied a link to the staging site below.
Yeah we will need to wait for their support to respond.
I tested it and it seems to mess up more things than just the comment.

And I'm also seeing this message as well which I'm not sure if it's a sign of a good plugin:

Oh man don't even get me started on that last one. It was sold as "you can edit the dashboard with Elementor" as a feature, which I ignored as irrelevant to me because Elementor is trash. I was NOT happy when I installed this and found out it won't function without Elementor. I told them they need to get BeaverBuilder or better yet Gutenberg on their roadmap stat because this is not ok. I activated it because I was already committed, but I'm definitely not happy about it.
Support has a login and I'll get back to you as soon as I have info from them.
Honestly, I would avoid the plugin if you can.
It only has 100+ installs and 2 reviews.
Yeah it's a pretty niche product that's only going to be used by certain agencies. It beautifully solves a very specific problem for me, so I really want them to do well and make this work. How support responds to this is going to be a large part of what I decide going forward though.
I'll keep you posted on what I find out.
Sounds good :)
OK so they were already working on another issue for me so we had some miscommunication which delayed things until I realized it yesterday (also we're in different time zones).
I've already requested an alternative to Elementor, but I repeated my concern about its requirement being a red flag, and they explained that they originally built this to use templates and child theming, like you'd expect. Apparently they received daily complaints about the complexity of that approach and incorporated Elementor because that's specifically what customers asked for. That surprised me, because I assume these are agencies, but I also feel like the average user seems to really like Elementor for some reason, so maybe that's why. I definitely understand where they're coming from. They're going to incorporate a fall back solution at some point.
I received a response that said:
"I love GeneratePress and have used it for many clients projects over the years, but plugin/theme conflicts do happen, especially since Dollie needs to do a lot of stuff on the front-end of the website. Site Management, Purchases and the Customer Dashboard are all mission critical and our team tries to handle as many complex setups and scenarios as possible.
...
There are a lot of poor products in the WordPress space, but I invite GP support or developers to take a look behind the scenes in our codebase, and I am confident they will see the quality of our work."
I think he has a great point about dismissing the plugin solely because of that requirement, so I wanted to pass that on. I really appreciated the in depth response. Again, the plugin perfectly solves a specific, unique problem for me, and their support has been excellent. Within 24 hours of me responding to the correct support ticket they had a fix that was released in a Dollie update. So the comment issue is resolved.
I'm really happy with my entire experience with them and wanted to make sure I make that clear because they've been great.
Thanks for your help looking into this!
Glad to hear.
