Do I need to pair a page builder with GP premium? I am creating a sports blog covering fantasy sports and sports equipment reviews
Only if you feel the need. Otherwise, just go with GP Premium smoothly.

Yup page builder isn’t required to use GeneratePress and GP Premium.
Can you provide an example of what you’d like to achieve and your comfort level with HTML and CSS?
Then I can likely suggest if you should go with a page builder option or not.
