I’ve read other support tickets about this topic, but couldn’t come to a conclusion.
Here are the details:
Problem: Date isn’t being updated in Google Snippet: http://prntscr.com/spljvn. (It updates fine on website, but not on Google Search)
Details: I’m using Author/Date snippet: http://prntscr.com/splkf1 so it could look like this: http://prntscr.com/spllf1. I also have custom CSS: http://prntscr.com/spllxs.
Question: How can I make the updated date show up in Google search?
P.S. I’ve had no problems with this issue with other themes. I’d update the post and shortly after, Google would pick up the updated date and display in search.
May 28, 2020 at 1:37 pm #1305557LeoStaffCustomer SupportHi there,
Can you try this?
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/generate_post_date_output/#only-show-updated-dateLet me know π

Anything else?
May 28, 2020 at 6:11 pm #1305741TibsQuick disclosure:
My previous theme (Soledad) didn’t have this problem. The date would update both on site and Google search.
I just changed the theme to (GeneratePress) and now, the date isn’t updating in Google search. In fact, it shows the original published date — not the updated date.
May 28, 2020 at 8:54 pm #1305822LeoStaffCustomer SupportCan you remove the other
generate_post_date_output
function which is adding the separator to test first? Please make sure your caching plugins are all cleared if you are using one.
May 29, 2020 at 7:58 am #1306507TibsJust to confirm:
Youβd like for me to remove this line of code: prntscr.com/sq56hs
And then clear cache?
May 29, 2020 at 8:06 am #1306521LeoStaffCustomer SupportYup give that a shot first.
Let me know π
May 29, 2020 at 11:52 am #1306865TibsI’ve removed the snippet: http://prntscr.com/sq9hxb
(Now, there’s no space between author and date: http://prntscr.com/sq9ihv)
I’ve also cleared cache. Lastly, I’ve requested Google to index content to see if date will update in Google search.
So far, nothing. Date is still outdated in Google.
May 29, 2020 at 4:50 pm #1307092TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperYou should be fine to add those functions back.
These things aren’t instant in Google – it may take a couple of days to update. Any chance you can link us to your site so I can take a look at the code to make sure it looks good?
May 29, 2020 at 6:11 pm #1307113TibsSure thing!
I’ve edited the original post to include my website π
Side note: I used to use Soledad theme and the dates would update (both on site and in Google). 2 days ago, I switched themes to GeneratePress and now, the dates are reverting back to original published date (in Google).
May 30, 2020 at 10:29 am #1307918TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperHi there,
So I went to
/**
and it doesn’t look like this snippet is activated: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/generate_post_date_output/#only-show-updated-dateI’m seeing the published and updated date in the source, whereas if the snippet was activated only the updated date would be there.
May 30, 2020 at 12:03 pm #1307991TibsHey Tom,
I’ve added the snippet: http://prntscr.com/sqrmmb
Now it shows two dates on post: http://prntscr.com/sqrmw2
P.S. Would it be ok with you if you removed my post URL from your answer?
I appreciate your help Tom in trying to find a solution π
May 30, 2020 at 12:06 pm #1307995TibsNote: I have this snippet enabled too: http://prntscr.com/sqrovn
May 30, 2020 at 3:58 pm #1308157TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperCan you remove the last function from your second snippet? The post date one?
May 30, 2020 at 4:27 pm #1308171TibsAre you referencing to the Author/Date snippet?
If so, I just removed it: http://prntscr.com/sqv563.
(Now, there’s no space between text and no ‘updated’ text: http://prntscr.com/sqv5lw)
