Hmm, maybe try disabling the CSS cache in "Customize > General"? Any difference on the live site?
Yep, that worked. Disabled as per your suggestion, and dumped browser cache again. Dumped Autoptimize cache again. That worked.
Gotta find an easy no-cache method ;)
BTW: "Live site"? This is a live site by my def, insofar as it is on an 'in the wild' server.

It seems to be fine now.
Enabled. Cleared all caches again. It survived intact.
Is that a clue? Obvs a cache thing. If so, it was surprisingly tenacious prior to 'turn off dynamic CSS'.
sorry... prior to 'cache dynamic css'. You know what I meant ;)
Very strange indeed. Dynamic CSS caching is disabled while in the Customizer, which is why the site looked different. Something must have been corrupted in the cache on the live site.
Well, it seems to be all good now, so let's try to live our lives as tho this pain was never part of it, OK?
