Contact form 7

I'd like to change the back ground color and color of my text of my contact form 7. I have my contact page/row devised into two sections. One is fine but I can not seem to change the background color or color of the text on my contact form 7 side. I've read that you can do it with CSS but I don't know anything about that.
You should be able to do that using the Colors add-on in "Customize > Colors > Forms".
I could have sworn that I had tried that. I worked just like I wanted. Then I was able to go back into the background settings of the widget and change the background color.
