Hello, I am using GeneratePressVersion: 1.3.28 + GP Premium Version 1.2.79 + [WordPress (Version 4.4.2)] on GoDaddy’s Managed WordPress Hosting.
Every Optimize / Minify Plugin I activate breaks my blog {becomes white page without styling – no colors or boxes – posts and links are visible. Pagespeed Insights scores very low.
These are the plugins I have tried:
RS Head Cleaner Plus Version 1.4.2.2
    WP Super Minify Version 1.3.1
JS & CSS Script Optimizer Version 0.3.1

I have a lot of active plugins, all of which work together with your theme, and other themes I have tried.
It is just Generate Press which breaks when I attempt to minify or optimize my site.

    Hi David,

For what it’s worth, I have 32 sites and have been building with WordPress for 10 years and have never found a “minify” plugin that doesn’t break my sites (at least partially).

The problem is mostly with javascripts being improperly terminated when combined with other scripts. When a minify plugin combines .js files, they usually try to combine multiple .js files in to one. If there are multiple instances of the same function or call, then there is a conflict which breaks the site.

Also, the .js or .css files that are needed for your site to display, are often not found after the minify plugin combines them. I wouldn’t minify it. A cache is just as good or better (some plugins do both).

I’m sure Tom will have some quality input on this, but I use Generatepress because it is feature rich *without* adding 25 plugins to get the look and feel I want. I know that isn’t an answer, but with the small footprint of GP sometimes less is more. Meaning, no minify is needed on the 3 sites I have built with GP, my pagespeed is great, and I reduced page bloat by an average of 1000 lines of HTML code compared with my old themes/plugins – Now that’s minified 🙂

    Good luck!

Caching/minifying plugins can be a pain for sure.

Do any of those plugins allow you to manually specific which files to minify/combine?

I know in W3 Total Cache if you choose “Combine only”, it works great with GeneratePress.

This post is also super useful for caching/minifying plugins: https://generatepress.com/forums/topic/google-speed-test/#post-122818

    Let me know 🙂

Hello James and Tom, thank you for your kind replies.
I have come to realize that my real problems are not Generate Press problems but rather GoDaddy Managed WordPress Hosting problems. GoDaddy does not allow me to use either of the best caching plugins available, and I am unfortunately stuck with 3 years of pre-paid GoDaddy hosting.
Since I was able to achieve Pagespeed scores of 78 Mobile, and 91 Desktop with the previous theme I tried,
I will give up the extended functionality of the excellent Generate Press Premium Theme, and build my site with a few less options.

This is not a problem with Generate Press.
    It is a hosting problem.
Therefore, This is no longer a support question.

    I appreciate your efforts,
    David.

    Hi David,

    Sorry to hear about that.

Just for the record, here are some scores for GP (free) and GP Premium:

    Free theme: http://speedtest.generatepress.com

Install these two very simple plugins:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/query-strings-remover/
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/async-javascript/

    Google Page Speed

78/100 Mobile (increased to 79 with this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/async-javascript/)
    100/100 User experience
92/100 Desktop (increased to 93 with this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/async-javascript/)

Pingdom Tools (tested on Dallas server)

    99/100 Performance grade
    650ms load time

Premium theme (using our demo): http://demo.generatepress.com

Note that our demo has a lot of images and videos, which do make a difference in these tests. We also have every single add-on activated.

    Google Page Speed

    77/100 Mobile
    97/100 User experience
    90/100 Desktop

Pingdom Tools (tested on Dallas server)

    93/100 Performance grade
    1.22s load time

These scores are pretty important to me, and I’m working to improve them all the time 🙂

    Indeed an old thread.

This problem can be due to multiple reasons.

Can you open a new topic?

    Thanks!
