colours seem to override background image.

Which part are you referring to?

The top bar?

Any reasons you are using the top bar instead of the header?

I add an image with

Customizing ▸ Background Images
Body

then in

Customizing ▸ Colors
Body

there is no way to turn off the colours and so the colour not the image is displayed

I'm indeed seeing the body background image without a overlay color:

Is that not what you are seeing?

Thanks for your help. One of the browser extensions I use (Dark Reader) was interfering with the appearance, I forgot about that.
