Child Theme & CSS

One quick note before I begin. This is the best theme I've ever used! I love it. Clean, simple, fast and has everything I need.
Anyways,
I can't get the child theme to work. Whenever I install it it screws up my website and then says that GP Premium requires GeneratePress installed to work. And asks me to install it.
I'm also trying to connect to an external CSS stylesheet using a HOOK element in the wp_Head. I have the hook set to wp_Head and for it to display on the entire site.
Then I have: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="example.css">
Am I putting the style sheet in the wrong place inside my File Manager? I have it under Public_HTML/example.css.
I have a stylesheet that I use for every one of my clients that would be nice to just load onto each website I start. That is the problem I'm having.
For the Child theme route:
I've taken a look at: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/child-theme-issues/ but can't seem to troubleshoot with that.
Any Ideas?

One other question. How do I add a photo to my forum profile here at GeneratePress?
When I navigate to Forum Profile > Edit I can't edit the photo.
Not too big of a deal but I would like to show my face around here!
