Child theme basics

I added a child theme from Adrian at WPcrafter as good practice but Im not sure how it works.
It appears to me to be identical to the parent.
Im a complete novice learning as I go and I doubt if I will do anything beyond using beaver builder and Thrive.
At the moment I have the child theme activated but Im not sure if I continue building my site on the child theme from now on, instead of the parent theme. If so, will I need to use the parent theme again?

The parent theme still needs to be installed but the child theme imports the setting for you.

Ok I read it, but just to be clear, can I assume that all I need to do is use the child theme from now on and leave the parent theme alone?
