Changing Themes for Existing Site

Hi,
I just tried to switch my old Word Press theme to the GP Premium Avery theme. I know, it's best to set up a staging site, but my host doesn't offer it and I just need to get the theme up. The problem is when I imported the Avery theme it completely overwrote my website and all my content was gone, instead it was displaying the demo website. I was able to revert that but it looks nothing like it does in the demo. I am wondering how can I get the theme to display as it is in the demo on my website with my content and change it from there? Right now it is a big mess. Also, unfortunately this website was mostly built with Site Origin page builder so is it even going to be possible to switch over or is it going to break the website?

Thanks!

Hi Victoria,

Importing the demo content would import the content from the site library but it should not erase your existing content.

We typically only recommend importing site library templates to fresh install.

If you need to do it to an existing site, then using a staging site would be the best idea as some tweaks will be necessary.

If the content is saved within the page builder and not the default WordPress editor (pages/posts) then yes you will lose the content when you remove from the plugin.

Hi Leo,

No the content is saved within WordPress editor pages/posts, but I've used Site Origin widget. So do I need to disable it? So you're basically saying I should not be importing any theme from the Site Library and instead doing it from scratch?

The answer depends on if you want to keep site origin or not.

If you want to keep using it, then there isn't a point to import a template from the site library.

If you don't want to keep using it, then you will need to build the site from scratch as the content is actually saved in the page builder itself.
