Changing appearance of photo captions?

Is there a way to change the appearance of photo captions? Specifically, can they be displayed directly below the photo, rather than superimposed over the photo? And can the font size for the captions be modified? We often use long cutlines that provide essential explanations for photos, and the photo is virtually obscured.

Thank you so much! I used the slight mod proposed by Aaron Redman, which works great. The font size still is a bit on the big side, but I suspect that is essential to keep the page mobile-friendly.

You can always adjust the font size using the font-size CSS attribute :)
