cannot remove author in Read theme

Hello,
I cannot remove author site-wide or within post editing in the Read theme despite unchecking the boxes for "Display Post Author" in Layout -- Blog -- Archives and Single posts. No option in post editing. Nothing I found in forums works. Thanks for your help!
