Can I have my blog page wider than my home page?
13 replies · Started by Jean on March 23, 2021
I am trying to make my home page narrower than my blog but when I make my blog wider it makes my homepage wider.
I have GP premium, but this website is the basic GP theme. Is that the problem? Is there a way I can make them different widths? If so, how do I do it?
Many thanks,
Jean
Hi there,
Any chance you can link us to the site in question?
You can use the private information field.
Let me know :)
Doh! Sorry, here you go. https://yourjobescapeplan.com/
Just to make sure, you cannot use GP Premium for this site?
The layout element would make this possible without writing CSS:

Thanks for this. I have followed the instructions to the letter and the page hasn't changed.
Hi Jean,
You can make your Blog page wider than the home page with the tool Leo pointed.
Here's what you have to do:
First we have to make sure GP Premium's Elements module is enabled.
To do that, go to Appearance > GeneratePress and activate Elements.

Once that's activated, you should be able to create a layout element.
To create a layout element, go to Appearance > Elements and click Add New Element.
From the dropdown, select "Layout". https://share.getcloudapp.com/p9ubpdpR
You should be able to see 6 tabs. Go to content tab: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/layout-element-overview/#content-1
You can set "full width (no padding)" if you want it to go full width of the page.
You can also set it to "full width (no padding)" and set the Content width to 1600px or anything higher than 1200px if you want a specific width value.
You the go to the Display rules tab and do this setting: https://share.getcloudapp.com/P8u50vp1
It's actually my Welcome and About me pages I am trying to get narrower. I have followed the exact process here and nothing works. I've even tried to put in a sidebar to see if any of the processes work and they don't. I have activated Elements and Disable Elements as shown and followed all the other instructions. I was so sure the cache would be the problem but I have cleared it. I have set the display rules for pages - that should work, shouldn't it?
Thanks for your help btw. You guys are amazing.
Best,
Jean
Hi there,
if the pages are not changing width then turn the logic on its head :)
First set the Customizer > Layout > Container width to the largest width you require.
Then use the Layout Element to set a smaller width and set the Display Rules to the specific pages you want to change.
That mostly worked. I have the welcome and about me pages at the width I want via the CSS and the blog at the width I want via the elements but my blog padding has disappeared and I can't see a way using CSS or elements to put it back. Thanks for any suggestions.
Best,
Jean
How many layout elements do you have ? is there still one for the archive/blog pages ?
Yes, but I can't see anywhere to add / change padding.
You shouldn't require the other elements - but if you do need them make sure the Container is set to Default this will preserve the Theme padding ( changing to Contained or Full Width will remove the padding )
Okay, so I've done that and the padding is back which is great, but the width of the blog post is a bit narrow. I will give up for now I think! Thanks a lot, though. Best, Jean
