Can an image slider to replace one single image on the header area?

Absolutely, but you'll need some sort of slideshow plugin installed.

The best free one I've come across is: https://wordpress.org/plugins/ml-slider/

Then you simply copy the shortcode the plugin provides, and paste it into the "Content" section of the Page Header metabox.
