Building a database within a theme (Dispatch theme) some advice would be :)

Dear helpful and knowledgeable people,
I am about to create an "encyclopedia" within my website, a database, where I would like people to add their research of plants and then also be able to search for plants, using both free search and drop down filters. The challenges I would like to ask your advice on is:
-How can I make it search just the database and not the rest of the website?
-Is it best to create a subdomain for this with a different WordPress installation to keep the databases separate?
-Is there any way of receiving the research people send in a specific format that makes it easier to add to the database?
-How do I work with the different entries, i.e. if i need to edit them, should they each be a "post"?
-I am planning on growing this over the years and would prefer not to use a plugin or something that is not supported 2 years down the line.
As you can see from the questions I have very limited (none) experience of databases.

This sounds quite complicated and I'm guessing that you will need a complete custom solution for your site.
If you are not comfortable with custom coding, then I'd recommend hiring a developer using a service like Codeable suggested at the bottom of this page:

If I can I would like to avoid customization, since it's hard to update later on...
It doesn't have to look exactly like that, but I'm thinking it's not much different from the way you search for products on an e-commerce site or recipes on a recipe site.
Anything in Gerenate press that can support that? :)
GP doesn't have any features related to this built-in.
We try very hard to only add features that are useful for the majority of our users in order to keep the theme and premium plugin fast and optimized :)

Thank you, i understand it's hard work to make features. :) Appreciate those that are already there. :)
Maybe a plug in would be the easiest way to go. Even with the risk of it being discontinued.
