Build a new site off-line while current site stays live?

I built my site several years ago on Pro Framework, but I'd like to do a complete rebuild/refresh using one of the Generate Press themes. Is there a way that I can work on building a new site in the background while my current site stays live, then swap the URL once I'm ready to push the new site live? Thanks for any advice. NB I haven't yet updated my current site to Generate Press - will this change the appearance if I do?
Hi there,
You can create the new site on local host then just follow the instruction here to move it to live:

Let me know if this helps.
Thanks Leo - sounds great! I assume local host means on my own computer? Would you be able to kindly point me to any tutorial or provide a few steps on how to get started setting up a local site?
Thanks again for your help.
That article is pretty complex - it's much easier if you use one of these plugins:

As for a localhost, Flywheel is pretty user friendly: https://local.getflywheel.com/
