Buddypress registration doesn't work with GeneratePress

I have an issue with my BuddyPress registration page - it doesn't work. When a registration is attempted the register page simply refreshes with the same entered data (minus password) and no new account has been created.

This seems to be a common issue very few clues as to what's causing it - see BuddyPress help threads here:
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/registration-page-does-not-work/

Deactivating plugins did not solve it, after more testing the only thing that made a difference for my case was moving to the Twenty Twenty-One theme from GeneratePress. This is so far the only clue I have towards solving this.

I'm at my wits' end. Given this is the only clue I have, I was wondering if you have any ideas on what's causing this issue. I'm not knowledgable on what changes when a theme is switched but clearly something in the theme is conflicting with BuddyPress registration.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi there,

That sounds strange - the theme itself shouldn't have anything to do with the registration functionality.

Since we haven't had any other reports on this, we will need to go through some debugging steps.

Can you first disable all plugins for us to test?

Have you added any custom functions at all or modify the theme's files?

Hi Leo, thanks for the quick response!

I have added some custom functions in a child theme, but reverting back to the GeneratePress parent theme doesn't solve the issue either. Only when I revert to Twenty Twenty-One does the registration issue go away - no plugin deactivations needed.

I've included login details below for you to have a look and disable plugins and test - as it's a live site please reenable after testing. Many thanks!

I can't deactivate/reactivate the plugins for you unfortunately.

Can you create a staging site with all plugins disabled including GP Premium and the parent GP theme activated?

I can’t deactivate/reactivate the plugins for you unfortunately.

I don't understand - you mean you're not allowed to by policy, or...?

I don't have a simple way to create a staging site - I don't have a managed host which I understand tends to offer these services. Do you have any suggestions on how a relatively untechnical person like myself can create a staging site - a plugin recommendation, perhaps?

you mean you’re not allowed to by policy

Yes that's the reason - especially if it's a live site with traffic.

Are you able to create a separate install? If so just use this plugin and duplicate the existing set up over:

I've created a staging site - details below.

The username/password didn't work for me.

Just sent you another set - login should be working now.

Can you please disable all plugins in your staging site for me?

And also activate the parent theme as I see lots of custom functions in your child theme.

Thanks.

Hi Leo

While switching off plugins I found the problem - Perfmatters, an optimization plugin, was disabling Wordpress' password strength meter script. Not sure why that would hinder registration but as soon as I switched that off it started working again.

Caching led me to believe that it was GeneratePress when it was Perfmatters. Keep getting caught by that.

Thanks for being patient with my floundering!

Glad to hear.
