Brand New Site, Cannot Upload Site Icon

Brand new site. Just purchased premium generate press theme.
I am trying to upload a 512 * 512 site icon. It won't let me go past selecting the icon.
At 900 * 900 I receive EM "there has been an error cropping your image"
Googled both problems, no apparent solution.
I only have yoru plugin installed and askismet. Using cloudflare, but rocket loader is not enabled.
Can you help..This is brand new, I am surprised something as fundamental as this appears to be broken?
I have just tried to activate ShortPixel with cloudflare API, and received an EM :
"Please enable PHP cURL extension for the Cloudflare integration to work."
Could that be the reason I cannot upload a site icon?

I reverted to PHP 7.2 and this has now worked.
However I a now getting warnings in my WP dashboard that I am using an insecure version of PHP.
Can you comment? Should the theme work with later versions of PHP?

Hi there,
yes, the Theme will work with the latest versions of PHP - however not everything in WordPress is PHP 8 compatible - including many plugins, so we recommend you upgrade to the highest 7.x version for now.
The reason your site icon file is not loading could be many - it may be the filetype or the size of the image file.
