Blog previews in Sections

I want to add blog previews to a section on my front page, preferably arranged dynamically in blocks, so that a visitor can read the first few sentences and then click the appropriate link to go to a post page to read the rest of the blog.
I want like 9 of them in the section AND I want them dynamically updated so that as new posts are added, they show up on the front page and eventually get pushed off as the 10th new post is added.
I feel like I MUST be missing something incredibly obvious.
Anyone know what it is?
I'm actually currently working on a plugin that will do this.
