When I try to customize in the appearance, generate press, I’m getting this error: Bad Request. Any suggestions?

StaffCustomer SupportHi Karen,
Does this happen when you try to open up the customizer?
If so can you try #1 here first?
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/debugging-tips/If that doesn’t help, then move on to #4 in the same article:

Hello, completed the following:
. Deactivate all of your non-GP plugins – does the issue still exist? If not, activate each plugin one by one until the issue happens again. This way, you can pinpoint the problem plugin. – issue still exists
2. Turn on WP DEBUG – do any errors display in your Dashboard or on your live site? – no errors found
3. If you’re getting a white screen while Customizing or somewhere else, try increasing your memory limit. I am getting a white screen when I try to open the layout section of generatepress and hosting company does not allow PHP changes on the shared server
4. Activate the core WordPress theme (TwentySeventeen) – does the issue still exist? If so, we know it’s not a GeneratePress specific issue. I’ve activated this theme, however unsure of how to replicate this issue since it is a completely new theme.
5. Check your error_log (or ask your hosting to) – are there any big errors in there? per hosting company, no errors found on server on website.

StaffCustomer SupportHi Karen,
For #4: Once you’ve changed the theme, you can open Appearance > Customize again and see if it still returns Bad request.
You can also try clearing cached web content and logout/re-login.

The problem isn’t when I try to go to the customizer, the bad request happens when I go to Appearance, Generatepress and start customizing, layout options.
that is when I get the bad request.

Lead DeveloperLead DeveloperHi there,
Just to confirm, you’re getting a Bad Request error when clicking the buttons in the “Start Customizing” area of “Appearance > GeneratePress”? If so, are you still able to load “Appearance > Customize”?
Let me know 🙂

Yes, I am getting the bad request error when clicking the buttons in the “start customizing” area of the “Appearance Generatepress. What I am trying to do is remove the search bar from the primary menu. Per the instructions in the forums, I have to change that under the start customizing settings.

Lead DeveloperLead DeveloperSome hosts have trouble with the URLs in the Start Customizing sections, as they include shortcuts to the specific Customize areas. We have an issue opened for this here: https://github.com/tomusborne/generatepress/issues/325
However, you can skip the Start Customizing section completely and just go into “Appearance > Customize”. This is the exact place those buttons take you.
To disable the navigation search, this should help: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/navigation-search/
Let us know 🙂
