Background image of Botanist starter site

Hello,
1. How do I change these header and background image of Botanist starter site?
2. Should I upload svg image or any type of image? (for better loading peerformance)
Thanks in advance.
1. It's at Customising > Background Images > Body.
2. Performance is not related to element type, but element size, the smaller the better.
