Background color of menu items are overlapping

When I assign a post to multiple categories and open the post, then all the categories are displayed as active categories in the main menu. Because of this the background color of menu items is getting overlapped.
For eg - If I open the first article on the home page, three categories in the main menu are getting displayed as active and their background is getting overlapped.

Please guide me with some code so that I can give some margin/padding between menu items.
