All I want to do is put text over an image...

It has "ven al desierto Aventura, sensaciones, color, ritmo, inmensidad, desierto..." and a big ol button.
Seems simple enough. That's what I want to do. Put text over the image on the front page.
I'm about to pull my hair out. When I do it, the image is only big enough for the little amount of text I put on the page. So if I don't ramble endlessly, one won't actually see the entire image.

What you want to do is set your container type to full width.
Then increase the top/bottom padding to give height to your element.
Then you can add your H1, text and button into the content.

OK. So. After fighting this for a bit and searching through these forums, I found the Elementor plugin and a neato tutorial for doing exactly what I want:
