Advance box shadow not working

First I want to say that I really like the theme. The problem I'm having is that I am wanting to add an advanced box-shadow on a div, like shown here: http://www.paulund.co.uk/creating-different-css3-box-shadows-effects. I can add the normal box-shadow, but the :after, :before do not seem to be registering and I end up with no box-shadow. Any ideas?
