    It’s actually recommended to add it.

    It helps the search engines better understand the content, ranking you better and displaying your website better.

    Actually several websites.

    The main reason I asked is that I am cautious about adding any mark up or plugins.

    Nah, writing HTML and CSS shouldn’t be a problem. The PHP and JS are the buggy ones ( plugins ).
