Adding excerpt to article removes "learn more" button in archive

Hi,
When I add an excerpt to an article, the "learn more" button disappears on the archive page. I use the default Split theme for GP. See screenshot.
See screenshot here. The one on the left has an excerpt, the one on the right doesn't.
