Adding Copyright Notice to Middle Footer Widget

Hi, guys.
I've looked through the forum for info on this and nothing I came across seems to work for me.
I tried using a text box in the widget as well as Custom HTML and I end up with
%copy% %current_year% followed by a link to my site homepage.
I would like the copyright symbol followed by the year and hyperlink of site name.

I did as you instructed and it works.
But does this mean that I will have to manually update the year going forward? Thank you.
You entered it as PHP right?
Did it show 2018 without you entering 2018?
No, it didn't. I entered the years.
But I didn't do the second part of the Top Tips, because I don't really understand where I would place that code. Thank you.
Ahh that requires PHP.
