adding blog to section on homepage?

I'd like to have my static homepage incorporate the latest blog post in on of the sections. right now I have one of the footer widget areas incorporating that but I'd like some more of the article to appear. What's the best way to do that? Maybe a plugin that would allow a widget in a section?
