Add Padding/Margin to Layout Element Where Content Area Is Contained

I have created a layout element for my blog. The content area is contained with no padding. The width is set to 700px. On mobile, the text covers the whole screen area. I would like to add some padding/margin to the left and right sides. I'm having problems finding the correct CSS class. What CSS would accomplish this for me? Thanks!
