What happens when you remove the <br />?

I solved this! If someone else is curious as to what I did in future forum searches:

I removed the <br /> tag from the GP Hooks setting.

And in the margin for the element (Advanced > Element Style) I added 12px top only for the orange bar.

So now nice 12px space all around the top two elements in the container that will appear on all pages (with some exceptions, as I'm rather exited about toying with options for mobile and desktop front page).

Oh yes, I just saw your reply post -- yes, that's what I did.

That removed any gap between the two elements -- so I could then set a top margin on the bottom element to get the gap I needed.
