Hi, I am using the MyPet template. I removed the shop completely, the woo commerce plugin, there is no blog, no ability for visitors to comment, edit, login, and there is no contact form, just a direct email link (mailto).

My client in Austria has to write her privacy statement and cookie policy. She wants to know if the site now uses cookies for visitors?

If yes could you please give details and suggestions how to best deal with this.

    Thanks 😊

    Hi Mel,

You’ll need a plugin for this. It’s not a feature available in GeneratePress.

This article may be helpful: https://blog.hubspot.com/website/cookie-consent-plugin

    Thank you.

The articles says “Virtually all WordPress sites will use cookies to track visitors in some capacity, whether that’s for analytics tracking or just remembering a user who left a comment on your page.”

For this website, visitors won’t be able to register as users and won’t be able to leave comments.
I will be using google analytics.

Will cookies be used for anything else?

Do you know any more text info that I can use in the Privacy policy with details about how cookies are used in my case? The template example text under “cookies” for the MyPet template only mentions the details if visitors register as users or comment which is not the case for me. IS there another sample text I can use that would fit for my case?

A plugin like this for instance allows you to configure a Cookie notice specific to your site or your region: https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/complianz-gdpr/

How cookies are used depends on your site. If you have plugins, it may be using a cookie for another purpose than the default.

    Hi Mel,

I’m from Germany. I know how you feel 🙂 In Austria it’s even worse.

Just check the site with the browser developer tools (> “Application”). You can see whether cookies are used or not. If the site uses only strictly necessary cookies, you won’t need a cookie banner plugin.

Thanks for the helpful tips, especially about the browser developer tools. I am surprised to see that my site is using 12 cookies. Yes, the rules in Austria seem very strict.

Log out before checking the cookies! You should delete all cookies (hit delete on the keyboard) and refresh the page. You might see old data in the dev tools. If cookies still reappear, just check whether they are essential or not.

After logging out there are only 3 cookies. Then when I deleted them and refreshed the page there were none reappearing.

I might use a GDPR cookie manager plugin.
